O Little Town of Columbiana

So, I have lived in this tiny town for many years.  Out of my 33 years of life, I have lived in this town for 24 of those years.  In all those years I do not remember ever there being a ceremony marking the lighting of our town's Christmas lights.  Nor do I remember there being a Christmas parade.  But from my understanding these traditions are fairly new.  These are traditions that as long as I continue to live in this wonderful town, I want to take part in.  Tonight was the lighting of our city's Christmas lights.  Growing up, these lights just automatically came on Thanksgiving night.  These lights are special lights.  In the center of town is our circle (or square depending on who you ask).  The Christmas lights in our town run down our Main Street and cross in the middle down Park Avenue.  But the special thing about these lights is the view from the sky.  If one were to fly over our town at night, our Christmas lights are in the shape of a cross.  It's been that way for years upon years.  I'm so glad it's never changed.

Everyone anticipated the lights coming on at 6:30 and sadly, only one strand of lights came on.  Apparently there was some "human error" with the timer and they never came on correctly while the towns people looked on.  It was still nice to see so many people come out to support our town.

For some odd reason I loved this window set up with Tiny Tim.  It was so old fashion looking. Kind of creepy now that I look at it in the photo. Oh well.  It was cute, trust me.

Our high school's choir sang and let me tell you, I was quite impressed! They were much better than I remember our choir sounding when I was in choir! Several male soloist were really good also.

My kids were....well let's just say, less than entertained. For them, it was not a big deal.  Although seeing as the big event didn't happen, I can totally see why.  But afterwards we headed to the park to see the lights display there.

Another first (to my knowledge) was a lights display at the park.  There was a $5 fee with the proceeds going to help fix up our kids Funland and also to benefit Toys for Tots.  I'd go through the lights display again just to help those causes.  The kids loved it of course and it has really helped me get into the holiday spirit.

At the very end of the lights display was one of the park pavilions filled will families who had stopped to see Santa and have a snack.  There were all kinds of goodies (for sale) and the kids could have their photos taken with Santa.  We just browsed through but brought the kids home for hot cocoa of our own.

It was a really sweet night.  I can't wait until Saturday because we will have the Christmas parade followed by our Christmas kick off weekend with horse drawn carriage rides and the local vendors will have sales and goodies.  My kiddos get are very excited because not only will this be the first year to go but they will actually get to be IN the parade.  The library is going to have a float that they will get to ride on while I will be walking and passing out flyers with a few others from work.  Too much fun.  I'm so sad that Mike has to work and miss out.  But we will take our camera and take lots of pics!

Well, I need to get ready to get some sleep.  I am wrapping up some photo edits (in between trying to blog).  Would like to have all my edits done by Sunday.  Fingers crossed.

Have a wonderful night friends and a happy early Friday!!   TTFN
