First Attempt

I took my first stab at making a genuine, home-made birthday cake. I thought I'd start with my nieces cake who is turning 9 tomorrow. I offered to make her cake as long as they had no expectations! HA! I think it turned out alright. Of course we are our own worse critic. I see ever flaw. Don't look at the enlarged pic because the flaws are much more obvious. It was so much fun though. I hope to one day take a class so that every year I can do my kids cakes. It sure does cut down on the cost.

And this is what happened while I was working on said cake. My daughter found the food coloring on top of dishwasher and decided to try some. My hubby said it looks she ate someone! And it was the yellow that she was "eating", not red!

SAY "CHEESE!"

Oh and those bangs! I cannot wait until they grow out! They are driving me nuts. I told Mike she looks like a little sheep dog. OK. I'm glad I got that out of my system. Time to turn in for the night. Until next time...TTFN.

Beth,

That cake is awesome! Great job! I attempted 4 of my kids birthday cakes, and after staying up until 3 in the morning the night before the party...I decided that time is money. I bought one of those cool tier cupcake holders, and voila... You did a great job and should totally do it more often. I saw no flaws. Cute red mouth too!

I think your cake looks great!

HVCC offered a cake decorating class this summer for the kids program (I have tons of adults wanting to take it though!)

Anyway, the lady who taught is the other 5th grade teacher and she does cakes for lots of occasion. After watching her this summer, I learned a few things - the proper tools make soooo much difference. A good bag and a good metal tip is the difference in bakery and novice. Also, she said you absolutely have to choose between taste and looks. She said if use crisco and pwd. sugar you can get it stiff enough to make it completely smooth and completely moldable, but if you use butter or add cream cheese or anything tasty, you'll never make a bakery looking cake.

Although, she did say if you buy meringue powder - I found it in the craft/baking section at Wal mart - you can get a little closer.

You can even buy cake boards and boxes for pretty cheap at a craft store or department store.

Just some things I learned, but haven't actually tried!

Anyway, good job on the cake. I think it looks wonderful!
