I feel very fortunate to be one of Thomas Nelson's book reviewers. I was given the information a few months back about joining Thomas Nelson in reviewing a small selection of new books. My first selection was Through the Storm by Lynne Spears, the mother of Britney Spears.
I must admit that I was skeptical when choosing this book. I had heard from a few other readers that this book was a great insight into this mother's life. I also must admit that I was a little curious. But I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed this book and it was a quick and easy read. I am not a fast reader and I was able to get through this book in just a couple of weeks.
Growing up in the south, Lynne's family background was far from the norm. She did however have a very loving family and a very close relationship with her sister. A great faith was instilled in Lynne that she carried over into her adult life. I never knew how deep her faith ran until reading this book. I believe that Lynne carried that faith into her parenting. Though strong in her faith she was not exempt for family dysfunctions and trials.
This mother never knew what her life had in store when she did what every mother would do for her child with a dream. She and husband Jamie encouraged their eldest daughter Britney as she danced and sang her way all the way to stardom. But Lynne never saw what fame would do to her family.
Continually going back to her relationship with the Lord this book has given me a much better understand of what life is like for those in the lime-light. I will never prejudge some in that kind of light again. The tabloids and TV portray life as one way while the truth is hidden.
I do not want to reveal all the best details so I will leave you with that. I will say that I really, really enjoyed this book.
